Hi,
What are the risks from galvanising the bulkhead and chassis of my 80-inch?
l am about to rebuild my 80-inch Series I. Welding is needed on the chassis and bulkhead, which l can do myself. l would like to get these areas galvanised, but l want to paint the chassis and bulkhead on top of the galvanising to retain the original look.
Some owners say that paint flakes off the galvanising, while others have said that the treatment can bend the parts.
Is galvanising the right way to go and, if so, what's the best procedure?

All the advice is correct. Paint does normally flake off the galvanised areas. Use special etching primers which will bond to the galvanised surface.then paint over.Ask your paint supplier to recommend a suitable paint System, l believe it is best to leave the galvanised item outside for several weeks to weather the treatment before painting.
Bending can occur during the galvanising process. The thinner the metal, the more likely it is to distort, and stressed metal can bend in unexpected ways.Your bulkhead will be stressed because of tension locked in it from the welding repairs. If the galvanising Company dips at minimum temperature for minimum time, then it is possible to galvanise a repaired bulkhead. But they won't guarantee it will remain straight - so it is a risk.
One or two restorers have done it, but it's fair to say they would be in a position to just scrap the bulkhead and use another if it didn't work out. Generaliy, it's best to brace the bulkhead by bolting bars across the weakest parts before dipping, though l doubt it would stop distortion.
A chassis is less likely to bend, but the same rules apply. Don't forget that, whatever is dipped, it will need reasonable holes -15mm minimum and preferably larger — to let the zinc run out. But l don't think it's necessary to galvanise anyway. If properly done, wax injection will give good protection.
