1) remove both water pipes into the top of the heater. 2) disconnect both cables.(the ones that run to the control on the dash) 3) unplug the power cable. 4) there is two 1/2 inch (13mm) bolts on the top of the heater.loosen these (or fully remove) you don't have to take them right out,but it's a little easier if you do. 5) at the bottom of the heater are two 10mm bolts that run into the footwell.it's easier to get someone to hold the inner end of the bolt while you undo the ones on the heater, unless you have EXTRMELY long arms! 6) take the grille off of the top of the wing (7 cross head screws) 7) move the intake duct away from the heater.it is stuck to the heater with a large, round foam piece.if you are careful you can just un-stick it.if it breaks (mine did) when I refitted it I just used silicon mastic to join the two together.the foam is available as a genuine part.got the number at home if you want it. 8) pull the heater up and out of the engine bay.there is another foam seal onto the bulkhead (firewall)
That is the heater out of the vehicle.
To strip it down, you need to drill out about 20 small 1/8 pop rivets that hold the heater matrix in place.it is easy to see which ones hold it in.(it comes out of the top of the heater unit)
When I pulled my one out,it was totally bunged up with mud, solid! so I just threw it into a bucket of warm water for 1/2 an hour and then gently hosed it through until I could see through it again.(the heater matrix is just a small radiator like in the front if the vehicle, with fins that can be easily bent,so be careful). Inside the heater itself mine was just full of lumps of dried mud,I pulled out what I could and steam cleaned the rest out and got it spotless, you could eat your dinner off of it!! The mud had gotten into the heater when I drove through muddy water and it splashed over the wings,it then worked it's way down the intake duct into the heater itself.I was amazed to see how much had got into it.it even jammed up the flap that stops air going into the cab.
re-assembly is just the reverse of dis-assembly,it only takes a couple of hours and man,did it make a difference! There is also a land rover part number for a "grille, chamois " that screws over the wing where the intake is and hangs down the side of the wing.the army use them in Norway where there is a lot of snow.it's so the heater can suck in air when it's 3feet deep in the white stuff.I'll post the part numbers for the parts I mentioned when I get home and dig out the catalogues. hope this helped a bit! hab ich mich wohl geirrt <img src="/forum_php/images/graemlins/div40.gif" alt="" />
