Hello Iveco drivers !

Well , we are back home from a pleasant trip on our truck “Stóribrjótur”
We had all kind of weather, sun, rain, and sandstorm in the desert
behind glacier Vatnajökull.
On the last day of the journey we came upon a place Þjórsárver in the
South of Iceland where “Icelandrover” gathering was held, Landrover
fans from Iceland, Germany, Britain, France, etc had a nice weekend
together with theyr cars.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The truck was doing it quite well in the journey, exept when we were
passing a very high mountain pass, then engine got very hot.
I have a question for you:

What is the normal engine temperature of your truck ?

Does your engine cool down belowe 80°c when you are driving
down hill ?

Do you know what is the ideal engine temperature for the Iveco engine ?

We have travelled a lot on our truck and the only problem we have had so
far ( 7-9-13 ) is over-heating of the engine in steep and long hills, what do you think
is the reason, and can you give me an advice how to cure this ?

Hope to hear from you !

With the best regards from Borgarnes Ísland !
Þorleifur.

Hello Þorleifur,

this seems to be quite normal - we made the same experience in hot Italy (35°C) and cold Norway (5°C) above the Polar Circle.

When driving up/down a steep mountain you have high rpm and low intake air speed from the front for the cooling radiator. Driving downward you HAVE to use the motorbrake - otherwise you will easily overheat and damage the brake discs.

We reach almost 98°C water temperature and sometimes 105°C oil temperature. We installed two small 3-blade 12V fans in front of the radiator - these help to cool down the temperature for about 8 - 10°C. They can be switched on/off by a seperate switch in the dashboard.

Hello Michel !

The idea with the extra fans is great, but there seemes not to be any space for that in my truck.
I was wondering, could the thermostad be broken since the temperature goes below 80°c when driving down hills ?
Do you know if there are thermostads with diffrent temperature available for these engines ?
Greetings ! Þorleifur.

Hello Þorleifur,

Erich said some weeks ago that the fan is being switched on at 95°C (+/- tolerance) and being switched off at 80°C. So the temperatures you notice seem to be fine.

I have cut out the grille to get more space for the fans.

At Bernhard's hp you can see how to override the thermoswitch and switch the fan manually.

Additionally I have mounted dust sealings above and on both sides of the radiator to get more intake air flow to the radiator.

Hello Þorleifur,

Standard temperature is in between 82 and 90°C, that is when driving on average country roads at air temperatures of about 10 ... 25°C. On Highways at 90km/h and air temperatures of 30°C and above the temperature will rise quickly to more than 90°C, then the fan will switch on.
Note that my vehicle is more than 4t heavy and is not very good in terms of aerodynamic resistance because of the alkoven.

In winter the "switch on"-temperature for the fan is up to around 98°C while in summer it is significantly lower (around 91...93°C), that is because the sensor for the fan is mounted at the output of the radiator, while the sensor for the dashboard instrument is mounted at the input.

If everything is working according to specification the temperature should go down to at least 90°C (under any circumstance and at every season) some time after the fan is on.

Driving downhills the fan should switch off again and the temperature may fall as low as 75°C (at low air temperatures and long downhill distances).

After "tuning" my engine behaviour changed dramatically with rising temperatures up to 100°C (at air temperatures of below 20°C) even when switching on the fan manually.
That's one of the reasons why I went back to normal conditions, no problems anymore since then, that means: I don't need an extra fan.

Dear Porleifur

Do you have the switched Fan or the permanent Fan?

If you have the permanent one you should change to the switched one, the permanent Fan is usually to weak for a heavy Car.

Hi Porleifur

I've seen that your Numberplate is right in front of the middle Airintake to the Radiator, this is perhaps not so smart because it blocks all the air away from the Radiator. <img src="http://www.viermalvier.de/forum_php/images/graemlins/hack.gif" alt="" />

Good point Ozy.

Another thing, that might help is to have a socked/cylinder from the cooler and around the fan, is your car equipped with that ?
Greetings ! Þorleifur.
