Below -20 I've found they grip really well. Zero to -10C it can be a bit slippery. In France several years ago the police were making everyone stop and put chains on, they saw us, laughed and waved us past. We went up the hill without chains better than many of the cars with chains fitted. We do carry chains just in case (legal requirement on some of the roads here in Canada over winter) but haven't had to use them yet.
